Registration Process

  Eligibility Requirements
  Domain Naming Conventions
  Availability and Registration
  Authorization Letter
  .gov Program Guidelines

Follow the steps below to register your domain name.

  1. Determine if you qualify to receive a managed domain name by reviewing the eligibility requirements. Managed domain names include .gov, -NSN.gov, and .fed.US.

  2. Review the domain naming conventions and ensure that your desired domain name complies with the conventions.

  3. Click here for a list of the information required to successfully complete a registration. Check availability and register for your desired domain name using our online registration form.

  4. Submit an authorization letter. This letter should be submitted within 90 days of completing the online registration form.

Once you complete the registration steps above, the Domain Manager will process your request. We will contact you if we require any additional information about your registration prior to activation.

Please check with your service provider and enter the DNS so that your domain name resolves. We are checking all name servers because of FISMA Directive 800-81. All name servers must return a valid A or MX record for your domain prior to approval and payment.

If your registration is in order, you will be notified via email when your domain name may be purchased and placed on active status.

NOTICE: .GOV Policy on website content restrictions must be followed. Pornographic, criminal, and/or terrorism/extremism material will not be tolerated on .GOV websites, and as such, they are subject to immediate suspension.
